New publication — FROM PLEDGES TO PLACES - Using spatial data to integrate nature and climate action

Global climate and biodiversity goals remain disconnected when we don’t know where actions take place — or who benefits and bears the costs.

Our new paper, published in Nature Portfolio Journal Climate Action, argues that spatial data must become core infrastructure for credible, just, and effective climate–biodiversity action.

Spatial data makes it possible to:

  • Monitor real outcomes beyond pledges
  • Learn across regions and contexts
  • Ensure more just and participatory implementation
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and communities

We call on the UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD Action Agendas to:

  • Require spatial data in non-Party reporting
  • Support integration and joint monitoring
  • Provide incentives, capacity building, and ethical guidance for data collection and sharing
