COP29: Seizing the moment to ratchet net-zero ambition
Hosted by the Net Zero Tracker and the Under2 Coalition, the event discussed among policymakers, researchers, and practitioners how climate action by subnational governments and private sector actors can be strengthened. The event was moderated by Thomas Hale, professor at the University of Oxford and an ACHIEVE consortium partner. He also announced the launch of the Oxford Climate Policy Monitor, which assesses how policies and regulations align with climate goals. Following the keynote speech by Catherine McKenna, former Canadian Environment Minister and head of the UN Secretary-General’s net zero integrity task force, Takeshi Kuramochi of NewClimate Institute, an ACHIEVE consortium partner, presented the latest findings on net zero pledges and implementation plans by non-state actors from the Net Zero Stocktake 2024 report. The presentations of research findings by the ACHIEVE partners were followed by lively panel discussions, including the Volvo Group Chief Sustainability Officer and the California Secretary for Environmental Protection on their collaborative effort to decarbonise freight transport.
